iSkin Cerulean TX/RX Review - Computeractive

iSkin Cerulean TX/RX Review - Computeractive

iSkin-Cerulean-TX-RX

Computeractive have published a review of the iSkin Cerulean TX/RX wireless stereo Bluetooth transmitter and receiver.
‘iSkin’s Cerulean TX/RX provides a simple method of listening to iPod music via Bluetooth wireless connection.
The package has two parts - the TX is a little Bluetooth transmitter that connects either to an iPod or to a computer, while the RX is a receiver that plugs into iPod speakers.
There’s no software to install - the TX and RX automatically pair to each other to send and receive music. This took longer than the 20 seconds claimed in the manual and we were already flicking through for help before the paired connection set itself up properly. Apart from that minor glitch it worked perfectly.’

Blue Raven Maestro 1070 iPod Speaker System

Shopping for a speaker system for your iPod can be a daunting task. There are so many different brands and styles on the market, that it can be very difficult to make a decision. If you are looking for a one piece system that can also interface with your TV to display slide shows and videos, Blue Raven's Maestro 1070 is worth checking out.

Hardware Specifications

70 Watts
2.1 Channel
3.5mm Aux input jack
Video out for displaying slide shows and videos on a TV

Package Contents

Maestro 1070 Speaker system
6 Dock adapters
Auxiliary cable
16 key remote

Remember Apple's iPod HiFi speaker system? They apparently don't sell it any longer... The Maestro 1070 is similar to that system. It has a footprint of 17.75 wide x 7.5 deep x 7.25 tall inches and is available in either Black or White versions. I was sent one in gloss Black to review.

There's something to be said for the simplicity of a one piece speaker system. No wires / cables to route is always a good thing in my mind.

I like the style of the Maestro 1070; very simple and classic looking. It should blend well in most rooms regardless of interior design style.

In addition to the small Blue Raven logo tag, the only eye catching elements on the face of the speaker system, are the chrome rings around the metal mesh speaker covers.

Looking at the back of the system, you'll find that it is equally simplistic. Besides the power cords, all you see are a power switch, Auxiliary input jack and a Video out jack. An auxiliary audio cable is included with the system if you wish to connect an audio device other than an iPod. If you want to try out the video out feature, you'll need to obtain your own video cable though. Bummer.

From the side, you will notice convenient hand holds built into the case. Since this speaker system is quite hefty, these grips come in pretty handy when you need to relocate the system.

On the top surface of the Maestro is the built in universal dock for your iPod. Six different adapters are included for various sized iPods. As long as your iPod has the universal docking connector on the bottom, you're good to go. The adapters just make the fit more secure.

A 16 key wireless (InfraRed) remote is also included so that you can control the speaker from across the room. There are buttons for standby, volume, bass, treble and even buttons to navigate the menus. Of course, if you're across the room, you'll probably have trouble reading the iPod's display...

The sound quality that the Maestro 1070 provides is very good. I wasn't sure how well a one piece speaker system would work, but I have been very impressed. Music is clear and rich, with good treble and bass. You can adjust the treble and bass to your liking by using the wireless remote. The default settings sound just fine to me though.

This system is supposed to also allow you to connect it to your TV to show photo slide shows and videos from your iPod. A cable is not included, so you're on your own to buy one. I had a regular old 3-way Red/White/Yellow A/V cable laying around and hooked it up the Yellow lead between the Maestro and my TV. For some reason though, I was unable to get it to display my photos or videos. The iPod classic kept saying to connect the video device. Not sure why it would not work, but I was unable to test this feature, so your mileage my vary here.

As far as using the Blue Raven Maestro 1070 iPod speaker system to fill a room with music, this product has no problems doing that. It looks great and sounds great. If you're looking for a one piece system, this one should be on your list of potential buys.

Mustek PF-i700 Digital Photo Frame Hooks up with Your IPod [IPod Frame]

Mustek PF-i700 Digital Photo Frame Hooks up with Your IPod [IPod Frame]

mustek_frame_ipod2.jpgMustek just rolled out its PF-i700 digital photo frame that has an integrated iPod docking station. Since digital picture frames are so hot this holiday season, perhaps the company figured it might as well ride that wave file satisfying the iPod crowd the same time.

Unfortunately, like lots a inexpensive digital photo frames, its 7-inch LCD panel has a 16x9 aspect ratio with a low-rez 480x234 screen. That's not going to look too good, but hey, it's cheap at $129.99, and you can watch MPEG 4, XviD and motion-JPEG movies on it.

Mustek helpfully tosses in a couple of stereo speakers with a headphone jack, but still, most digital cameras shoot in 4x3, so this 16x9 frame will usually give you black bands on either side of your pictures. Look for it in March. Bah, humbug.

Ultimate Ears Super.fi 4vi: the review

Ultimate Ears Super.fi 4vi: the review

superfi4vi.jpg

If you’re the owner of an iPhone, then you’ve no doubt begrudged the stupid recessed headphone jack and spent many a night lying awake, hoping for a resolution to come swiftly in the night. If you don’t own an iPhone, you probably have no idea what I’m talking about, so move along. There’s nothing to see here.

Alright, now that they’re gone, I’m going to be frank with you all. I have a love-hate relationship with the iPhone. I know I slandered it to no end before its release, but after the price drop, I couldn’t help myself — I needed a new iPod and I’m an AT&T customer, what choice did I have really?

While the device has its problems, for the sake of this review, we’re only going to focus on one: Apple’s crazy decision to use a recessed headphone jack; a decision that, without a clunky adapter, rendered useless every decent set of headphones out there. And even with the adapter, your headphones have no mic or toggle button, which is one of the coolest things of the iPhone. It was a conundrum of epic proportions.

Six months out, however, we have some options. Biggs recently recommended the V-Moda Vibe Duo, a completely valid solution priced at a reasonable $89. They include all the features found on the Apple’s exorbitantly priced, piece of crap stock headphones, except they don’t suck. The one major setback is that the cloth cords, while very cool looking and seemingly sturdy, tend to knot up — a nuisance I couldn’t bare.

Fortunately for me (and all iPhone owners, really), headphone heartthrob Ultimate Ears has decided to dive into the iPhone arena with the Super.fi 4vi ear buds. Built from the same drivers found in UE’s Super.fi line, the 4vi incorporates a mic and a toggle button. The toggle, I should note, is aces. Unlike the V-Moda and Apple, UE created a separate toggle box that isn’t attached to the microphone. This is a particular advantage over the Vibe Duo whose toggle button is clumsily placed and nearly impossible to push quickly (and impossible to push with gloves on).

In terms of sound, the 4vi is far and away the best iPhone specific headphones that I currently know of. While not exactly in the same class as earbuds like the Triple.fi 10 pros, the 4vi model achieves a full range of sound in a tightly packed package with attractive aluminum canisters. The included silicone tips allow you to completely shut out ambient noises, so no more being subjected to beggars, tourists, crappy street musicians, people handing out stupid fliers and, most importantly beggars. Good times.

Like all UE products, the 4vi offer superior sound quality at a price, $150 in this case. Sure it’s half as much as you spent on your iPhone, but you own an iPhone, you’re not one to skimp on status symbols.

But if you simply can’t muster the scratch for a pair, you’re in luck. We’re giving away one pair of the Super.fi 4vi in an old school CrunchGear reader response contest. Between now and Monday at 1 p.m. EST comment your little hearts out on any CrunchGear post.

We will select a winner based on various criteria including frequency of posts, quality of said posts and, if all else fails, coin tosses. To win, you MUST enter your email address in the commenter information field. Comments without email addresses will not be counted as entries. Now get started.

Aerielle's i2i Hangs From Neck, Shares Music With Your Hot Friends [Group Action]

Aerielle's i2i Hangs From Neck, Shares Music With Your Hot Friends [Group Action]: "

Aerielle_i2i_Ladies.jpgWe've all been there, lying in our bikinis thinking, 'Why on earth can't I wirelessly transmit the sexy songs I'm listening to to my super sexy friends?' This common dilemma provoked Aerielle to launch the i2i Stream, a lightweight matchbox that can 'send or receive CD quality sound up to 30 feet wirelessly.' The idea is that you can DJ for a whole group of your friends, then pass the job to someone else who can then return the favor.

Aerielle_i2i.jpgIt's a cool idea, though we wonder exactly how many friends we can broadcast to at once, and if there's any pairing involved. It's not iPod specific—just a 3.5mm jack for anything you want to connect (plus another one so you can hear the tuneage yourself). But there may be limits. Since it uses 2.4GHz RF, it could have a latency issue (particularly if it's using a Bluetooth variant), so sharing the audio of a video player could be out of the question.

Its got a rechargeable battery inside that provides 5 to 7 hours of battery life. You charge the thing via USB, which I think is weird considering this isn't a PC accessory, but Aerielle promises to sell a wall charger too. (You can probably use your BlackBerry or Motorola charger, since it's all the same jack.)

It's $70 for one or $120 for a pair—an ideal situation for me since my hot friend happens to be my wife, and yes dear, it's you and only you. Aerielle will also release $10 Stream Skins molded cases available in blue, green, pink, silver and clear, in case all of your super hot friends are equally super worried about, you know, color coordination and stuff.

Jibe Audio's Sound Machine iPhone dock -- designed by Apple alumni

Have you heard of Jibe Audio? No worries, the San Francisco based company doesn't have any product... yet. That will change at CES with this, the Sound Machine iPhone docking station. Designed in part by Robert Brunner who led Apple's design team from 1989-1996, an era which birthed the Newton and the first Powerbooks. The Sound Machine is said to support Bluetooth audio, iPhone synchronization over USB, and unspecified audio input for other audio sources. If this is the same device first mentioned as the 'iPhone Station' back in October, then it will also feature DVD playback and streaming internet radio. We'll find out soon enough. CES is only a few weeks away.

TUNEWEAR PRIE TouchStand for iPod touch

TUNEWEAR PRIE TouchStand for iPod touch

PRIE TouchStand

Tunewear unveiled the new PRIE TouchStand, a leather case for Apple's iPod touch. A soft black leather exterior combined with a flip cover that gives access to the iPod touch screen and home button make it a useful accessory for protecting your latest gadget. The PRIE TouchStand also features a wide clip to attach the iPod touch to your belt or pocket.

The clip doubles up as a viewing stand, in a fixed, open position. Place it on your desk for hands-free viewing. Along with the TouchStand, you get TuneFilm, a clear protective film for the iPod touch - for free, even. It covers both the multi-touch display and the mirrored back.

Priced at US $29.95, the Tunewear PRIE TouchStand is now available from the TuneWear store.

Tiny Audio Bug Speakers for iPod

Tiny Audio Bug Speakers for iPod

82411.jpgThe iPod is great. You can take most (or all) of your music with you and listen to it whenever you want. But what about those times where you want to listen to your music, but don’t want to use your headphones to do so? You need an external speaker. But most speakers are bulky and not that portable or they need some sort of external, corded power source.

The Audio Bug speaker is small, extremely portable and runs on two AAA batteries and plugs directly into your iPod (or other mp3 player) headphone jack to play your music wherever you want. The speaker is small enough to fit into a pocket and is ready to plug in at any time for music wherever you are.

Features:

  • Works with all audio devices with standard headphone input

  • Compact design

  • Portable

  • 2 High quality speakers

  • Pivoting headphone jack for easy positioning

  • On/Off switch on top of speakers

  • Red indicator light on front

  • 2 AAA batteries (not included)

  • Measures: 3¼’ long x 2″ wide x 1″ high

  • Weight: ½ oz.

  • Made in China

Best of all, it’s cheap. You can pick up a set of your own from Solutions for $19.95 each.  Heck, you could buy one for everyone in your family who has a mp3 player!
