New Belkin chargers turn your car’s lighter socket into a USB port

New Belkin chargers turn your car’s lighter socket into a USB port

f8z446_highres

If you’re one of the incredibly small camp of people who use the phenomenally unpopular ‘I-Phone’ or whatever, you might find this useful. The Micro Auto Charger fits right in your cigarette lighter’s slot and sits flush with your dash, exposing only a USB port. Good news for people with iPods who don’t want something protruding from the dash, but bad news for everyone without iPods, since they’ll have to get the much larger Dual Auto Charger, which isn’t nearly as sweet.

f8z280_highres

The big one has two USB ports and will charge pretty much anything that can charge over USB, but it also sticks out super far. I guess you can’t have everything.

When it comes to announcing new products lately, iHome has been pretty mum.  Set for release in May for $60, the iH24S is a travel alarm clock that features an iPod dock and a ‘flip back’ that doubles as a sheath for the face of the device and a stand when flipped open.  Based on pics alone, though, the iH24S looks a tad large for a portable alarm clock.

Griffin Navigate: iPod Remote with FM Radio

Griffin Navigate: iPod Remote with FM Radio

Navigate_2

If you’re looking to put an inline remote on your iPod, Griffin has one new way to do it — and it adds that oldest of old-school wireless music sources, FM radio.

Griffin’s Navigate plugs into the dock connector, bypassing the pesky requirement for chips that may or may not be DRM for headphones. This has another advantage — aside from piping the music, hot and steaming, to your headphones, the Navigate can also display track info in the OLED screen and give access to EQ, playlists and shuffle modes. And did we mention it has an FM radio? Try to stay awake at the back.

You might scoff — after all, this thing is bigger than an iPod Shuffle and it’s just a remote. But Griffin makes some good points, especially about restoring the tactile feedback of the clickwheel iPods to the Touch and iPhone. Apple has gone some way to addressing this with the clicky inline remote on the latest earbuds, but then you are limited to those same crappy earbuds. With Griffin’s widget you can plug in any cans you like.

All this and an FM radio for listening to ads interspersed with the occasional hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Available now, works with any recent iPod that has a dock connector, $60.

Onkyo Debuts iPhone/iPod Accessories

Onkyo Debuts iPhone/iPod AccessoriesOnkyoiPhone.jpg

Onkyo dives further into the iPhone/iPod world today by releasing a line of three audio-video accessories. The first two revolve around Onkyo's proprietary U-port (universal port), which offers audio, video, power, and control connections in one port. The Onkyo UP-A1 is a dock and charger that connects your iPod or iPhone to your home theater system. It connects with component video and audio, and includes a remote. While it's one of the more attractive docks we've seen, the $109 list price seems optimistic. It goes on sale next month.

The second module is an HD Radio tuner, the UP-HT1: It lets you add HD radio to a U-port-equipped receiver (such as the TX-SR507). The ideas is that the buyer will create a network of UP devices, which all connect easily. The radio will list for $159 in July.

Finally, the company is releasing a non-U-port dock, for people who don't want to both with the universal port business. The DS-A3 offers component audio and video connections, and includes a remote. It's already shipping at the steep list price of $139.

Onkyo Debuts U-Port Accessories for iPhone

Onkyo today introduced a line of audio-video accessories, including the company’s new proprietary Universal Port (U-Port) connection. The U-Port enabled models consist of a dock for iPhones and iPods, and an HD Radio module; the company is also introducing a second dock for iPod designed for non-U-Port receivers.

up_a1_front_ipodt_300

Onkyo’s Universal Port, which was introduced on the company’s TX-SR507 and TX-SR607 AV receivers earlier this year, provides a single-cable connection for these new accessories. All necessary connections, including power, audio, video, and control signals, are incorporated into the Universal Port, making it simple for consumers to expand the capabilities of their system in just minutes.

The Onkyo UP-A1 dock recharges the iPhone or iPod, and allows the user to control the device using their Onkyo AV receiver remote control. It is the first Onkyo product to carry the ‘Works with iPhone’ certification, is capable of carrying component video as well as audio signals, and is compatible with iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPod Touch (1G, 2G), iPod Classic, iPod (4G, 5G), iPod Nano (1G - 4G) and iPod mini. The UP-A1 dock and charger will be available in May at a suggested retail price of $109.

iPWR Mobile Battery for iPhone and iPod

The market of the mobile backup batteries for the iPhone and iPod is getting overcrowded. Lately, we’ve heard about a new company called Wireless Input which prepared such a product called iPWR, touting it to have ‘1.8 times the capacity of similar products on the market.’ As a result of the built-in 1800mAh battery, iPhone standby time can be extended for up to 360 hours, music up to 40 hours, video up to 10 hours and talk time up to seven hours.

The device measures 2.4x2.3 inches and has a dedicated on/off button, which is paired with green LED light to indicate the operation status.

Usage is simple, all you have to do is insert the iPWR into the dock connector of the iPhone or iPod, turn it ‘on’ and charging will start instantly…

Interested? iPWR is already from Wireless Input’s website from where you can grab it for $59.95.

Review: Otterbox Impact Case for iPhone 3G

Review: Otterbox Impact Case for iPhone 3G

The Otterbox impact case does a great job at protecting the iPhone 3G without adding too much bulk. I’ve bought a handful of thin iPhone cases, but haven’t liked any of them as much as the OttherBox iPhone 3G Impact Case.

The case is made of durable silicone with additional coring in the corners to help absorb bump and shock. It has indented textured ridges on either side for added grip. All ports, buttons, and functions are accessible through the thin silicone layer and there is a cut-out circle in the back, so the apple logo remains visible.otterbox-impact-iphone-case

There are a lot of iPhone 3G cases to choose from, but the Otterbox Impact Case is designed to provide more protection than most. It is also thicker on the corners and back, which are the most likely points to hit the ground when you drop it.

otterbox-impact-iphone-case-back

The case is all about function and not as fashionable as some of the other cases out there. It makes the iPhone 3G look more industrial, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your taste. One thing that I don’t like is the enormous Otterbox logo that’s stamped on the back of the case.

It’s available in black and white, which will satisfy most iPhone users.

I’ve been using this case for a few months now and it’s kept my iPhone in pristine shape despite a few drops onto hard surfaces. The silicone does attract dust, but it can easily be cleaned with a dry cloth or t-shirt. Also, the silicone case doesn’t stretch out and seems to maintain its shape.

Otterbox and other manufacturers do make cases that do an even better job at protecting iPhones, but they are much bulkier and overkill for many people.

The Otterbox Impact Case for iPhone 3G retails for $19.99 at Otterbox.com and Amazon.com for just $12.95. Unfortunately, it’s not available at Apple retail stores and major retailers like Best Buy.

Vestalife introduces the Firefly and Jewelbox iPod docks and a cool 3D Butterfly Monitor

Vestalife introduces the Firefly and Jewelbox iPod docks and a cool 3D Butterfly Monitor
vestalife_ipod_dock.jpg
Remember the Ladybug iPod dock from Vestalife? If you do and if you happened to have liked the concept, here’s something good for you to look forward to. The same company released two new docks called the Firefly and Jewelbox. Both of them have similar designs and also the same color. Both these models can be controlled with remotes, have volume controls that can be adjusted using a touch interface. As far as the sound output is concerned, they do fairly well with the digital amplification. The Firefly gets one better than the Jewelbox here since it has an in-built subwoofer. Also in the line of new releases, Vestalife has introduced a 7’ inch LCD monitor that will magnify the joy of viewing your videos via the SD/MMC card reader. It’s called the Butterfly Monitor and plays movies on a 16:9 widescreen. It also has a remote control, an AUX jack, a digital amplifier and the ability to make 2-D images into 3-D. (Psst! I’m scratching my head too!).
There are no details about the pricing of Vestalife’s Firefly, Jewelbox nor the 4D Butterfly Monitor. However the products are expected to come in by the fall of this year.

Review: Altec Lansing inMotion MAX

Review: Altec Lansing inMotion MAX

scaled105_0001

I’ve had the inMotion MAX for a few months now and I didn’t open it because I was worried it would be just another iPod dock. I was wrong. The Altec Lansing inMotion MAX is more feature rich, offers comparable if not better sound, and is more compact than other docks I’ve used in the past few years, including my Bose SoundDock Portable.

The inMotion is a completely portable iPod dock with built-in battery and a collapsable front tray and rear foot. It works with

almost every iPod including the iPhone. It supports aux-in devices via a mini-jack and also includes an FM tuner. It costs $200.

Before you attack my earlier comparison, I’m coming at this in the same way the average consumer would with the understanding that there are great iPod docks (like the Tannoy), good ones (like these and the Bose), and bad ones. These are in the mid-range and that’s fine for most folks.

The dock won’t buzz when your iPhone rings, a problem that plagues most docks. In terms of overall sound I’d say the inMotion is far better than the average iPod dock and on par with the Bose SoundDock. Both docks have a high level of fidelity at high volume and the treble is quite clear. This is not a dock that is designed to go load. Some distortion comes through once you get past a certain point - about 23-25 on the volume reading. It goes up to 40 which is great if you’re hosting a college frat party but not so nice for listening. However, for the kitchen or bedroom, this thing is great.

I didn’t hear a very deep bass with this dock but, then again, I haven’t heard deep bass with any other dock either. The ‘Expanded Sound Stage’ feature adds a bit of depth to the music but audiophiles will probably turn it off.

The battery lasts about eight hours on one charge - I left it on at 8pm and it died at about 6am. The FM radio picks up RDS data and displays it on the amber LCD screen, a cool little perk.

I’ve been using this as my primary music source for the past few weeks and while I haven’t been blown out of the room I’m quite happy with the warmth of the audio and detail in the sound.

Bottom Line: An inexpensive iPhone/iPod dock with great sound and great features.
