Polk Audio I-Sonic HD Radio And iPod Speaker System Review

Polk Audio I-Sonic HD Radio And iPod Speaker System Review

dscn0899

Polk Audio i-sonic HD radio review

I’m surprised how many people still don’t know what HD Radio is.  The best way I can describe it is that every major radio station that you know has an HD version and is simultaneously broadcast with its analog version.  Simple right?  Admittedly I had gone years without ever hearing HD Radio so when I received the Polk Audio I-Sonic I was totally blown away by how awesome it sounded.

Having had a Sirius Satellite Radio (it was stolen), I thought that the programming was cool but the audio fidelity was horrible.  Not with HD Radio.  Sound is what HD Radio is all about and the Polk Audio I-Sonic excels at it.  Straight out of the box the I-Sonic delivers stellar audio reproduction values at no expense and I can easily say that I am now a huge fan of Polk Audio products and HD Radio.

In addition to being an HD Radio Receiver, the Polk Audio I-Sonic is also an iPod dock capable of iTunes tagging.  When you hear a song you like, just press the tag button on the I-Sonic and the information is stored and transferred to your connected iPod.  The next time you sync with your computer you can seamlessly buy all your tagged songs from iTunes.  For those of you who buy music this is a great way to check out some new tunes.

The I-Sonic has a myriad of other features as well.  There is a full alarm clock mode, station presets, HD station seek mode, plus the ability to plug it into a TV so you can watch videos or movies from your iPod thus making it a more suitable device to have stationed in your living room.

Aesthetically it kind of reminds me of that BOSE (Buy Other Sound Equipment) speaker system. You know, the one with the infomercial.  It actually has a very unique shape and doesn’t really have a level surface area so you can’t put beers on it.  Polk Audio uses a 4 speaker array with patented PowerPort technology that allows the I-Sonic to deliver room filling sound no matter where you are standing.  I totally agree.  The I-Sonic sounded great regardless of my position to the speakers and even when I was out of the room.

It has a display that is large and blue, and easy to read from across the room.  I also like the fact that HD Radio displays the artist and the track so even if you aren’t tagging music you know who you’re listening to with a glance of the display.

I dabbled through several genres of of music before finding my sweet spot at classic rock.  With no tweaking at all the I-Sonic sounded lavishly lush.  In fact, I had never heard classic rock sound so good.  Most memorable was how round and balanced the bass sounded.  It measured a perfect connection with treble and mid range frequencies to create a classic rock ‘symphony of emotion.’  In all honesty, words can be very descriptive, but they don’t come near to describing how immaculate this HD radio sounds.  Even using an iPod through it was up there with my current favorite dock the iPig, and though the iPig still jammed a little louder, the quality of the I-Sonic should not be taken lightly.

Tagging worked very smoothly and showed up just under the iTunes store bar in my computer’s iTunes.  Just one click will bring up the collection of songs you have tagged with the option to buy them.  Very easy.

The TV out capability worked flawlessly and really added versatility and depth to the I-Sonic.  All you have to do is make the proper cable arrangements and adjust the settings on your iPod and you are good to go.  The remote control works well with the TV out as well as all the other modes.  My only complaints about the controller are that it’s difficult to tell which end is which and that it could be bigger.

I’m really racking my brain for more to say about this HD Radio system.  It sounds killer, it’s easy to use, has a bunch of modes that are all well designed and implemented, and if you buy music the iTunes tagging feature will surely broaden your music horizons.  I had no issues with the firmware and all of my iPods and iPhones worked like a charm.  The price might be sticking point for some ($400), but I have rarely seen a dock that has so much quality to offer!  This is the type of system that a whole family or household can enjoy and I am just really flat out impressed with this product.

Pros:

  • Sound so awesome you won’t believe it’s radio

  • Versatile and easy to use

  • Compact design

Cons:

  • No matter what I say people will think it’s expensive

  • Remote control could be shaped so you know which way is the front

Buy it here for $400!

XM’s Skydock Is The Perfect Companion To The iPhone

XM’s Skydock Is The Perfect Companion To The iPhone

xm-sky-dock

Early this week we saw Rhapsody hop on board the iPhone train with the announcement of their streaming app (now pending).  While XM/Sirius has had an app for sometime now, the satellite radio company is ready to take yet another leap in displaying their devout allegiance to Apple’s iPhone/iPod.

The XM Skydock is probably best described as a satellite radio head unit without a faceplate.  That’s where the iPod Touch and iPhone come in.  By snapping either one into the Skydock’s clutches and firing up the XM/Sirius app, subscribers can receive full blown, live satellite radio.  It’s intended for use in the car as the flexible stalk features a cigarette lighter compatible plug.  XM has also tossed in a Magnetic Mount Antenna and an Aux cable, that is assuming your car’s head unit has the appropriate input.

The XM Skydock will launch this Fall for $119.99 and will probably attract a fair number of XM’s 18.5 million subscribers.

Altec Lansing Announces MIX Boombox

Altec Lansing Announces MIX Boombox

altec-lansing-mix-boombox

I think it might be fair to say that Altec Lansing has gone of the freakin’ reservation with their MIX Boombox.  While I appreciate is versatility and utilitarian approach, something about it seems so 80s to me.  Maybe its the word ‘boombox’, or the stylings of a time passed?

This beast includes a set of 5.25-inch side firing subwoofers, dual 1-inch tweeter, dual 3-inch mid range drivers and of course the quintessential iPod/iPhone dock.  Hidden on top is a slot for the carabiner inspired remote control and two 3.5mm input jacks for adding two more audio sources, or iPods as their marketing pictures depict.  Jamming in 8 D battery will get you up to 30 hours of continuous playback time and despite its rugged looks the MIX Boombox isn’t spec’d for the beach or any outdoor activity.

The MIX Boombox will be available this September for $299.95

SendStation PocketDock

SendStation PocketDock

SendStation PocketDock

The SendStation PocketDock is able to soothe any raging beast who thinks that the proprietary dock connector found in the entire iPod line is a curse to humanity in general, as this device lets you synchronize and charge using the miniUSB port, which is more or less the accepted standard at this point in time. This extremely small PocketDock will share a similar footprint as that of the iPod plug from Apple, featuring a 3.5mm jack to keep the miniUSB port company. The former lets you bypass the volume board utilized by the headphone jack, resulting in clearer sound quality that is somewhat similar to a dock. You might want to pick up this $30 device if you happen to dabble with a whole lot of miniUSB gadgets.

Factron Quattro for iPhone case

Factron Quattro for iPhone case

Factron Quattro for iPhone case

If you want to totally ruin all the good work that went into the iPhone's design, then the Factron Quattro case ought to be the right candidate. Depending on your taste, you can choose from leather, carbon fiber and stainless steel material. The case itself is mighty expensive though, retailing for a shade under $200. If you want to take things further, then extra lenses such as the fish-eye, wide angle and macro zoom will retail anywhere from $15 to $50 a pop. It does seem as though the Factron Quattro will be a Japan-only product though, but hopefully import shops will carry these.

New Hearing Aids Double As Headphones, Reduce Grandpa to a Living, Breathing iPod Accessory [Hearing Aids]

New Hearing Aids Double As Headphones, Reduce Grandpa to a Living, Breathing iPod Accessory [Hearing Aids]

In their steady march toward decrepitude, tech-savvy boomers will confront some weighty questions: How will we pay for Social Security? What's up with rap music? Why can't I connect my BlackBerry to my hearing aid? Well, good news!

Stacked with the same bone conduction technology we've been seeing in Bluetooth headsets for some time now, along with wired and wireless device connectivity, a new class of hearing aids in making its way into patients' ears—or more accurately, their skulls. Bone conduction makes a big difference to hearing aids' core functionality, eliminating all manner of noise issues, but the heart of these new plugs is a powerful processing platform, with a gadgety twist:

[T]he newer processors, costing about $6000 (AUD) each, shut out background noise, giving users up to 25 per cent better hearing, and can be attached directly to MP3 music players or wireless headsets for talking on the phone

This makes a lot of sense—wearing earbuds or a Bluetooth headset on top of hearing aids would feel a little redundant, no? Anyway, as they are, the systems, made by Australian company Cochlear, aren't as cyborgian as you might imagine. The processor, with its headphone jack and wireless radio, isn't actually drilled into your head—that's just the cochlear implant—but instead worn around your ear, headset-style. The company's even got a range of 'Freedom Accessories' which, let's be clear here, are consumer tech accessories meant to indirectly plug into your bone. It's a great time to be an old.

UPDATE: Commenter Brutek gives us some background on how these work, and what they actually are. TL;DR version? Cochlear implants aren't technically hearing aids, and the procedure you need to be able to use tech like this is actually quite invasive and expensive on its own:

BTW, the processors are AUD$6000 but total cost of the rest of the equipment plus surgery for cochlear implants can go up to US$250,000 although the cost has been coming down.
The bone conduction technology, which requires a fixed, passive implant into the bone is for a smaller market than cochlear implants.
My son was one of the first to have the FM receiver add-on which is coupled to a Bluetooth transceiver. Bluetooth currently consumes too much power, but the FM receiver still allows a full day of batteries.
And FYI, people with cochlear implants are cyborgs by definition (total audio mediation) and are an under represented minority. There are many issues that need to be taught because of the lack of education people have about what these devices provide and don't provide.
There is also a big culture backlash from the deaf community, but the deaf community doesn't understand that not all cochlear implant users were not born deaf and may have lost their hearing later in life and want to continue to hear (like my son).
Anyway, my 3 cents.

Logitech dishes two new iPod / iPhone speaker docks, one of them rechargeable

Logitech dishes two new iPod / iPhone speaker docks, one of them rechargeable

Not quite sure if you've noticed, but Logitech has been on a tear for the ages here recently. As the torrent of new gear continues, we're now faced with another pair of iPod sound systems desperately attempting to knock the 'me-too' status and contribute something positive to the world. The Rechargeable Speaker S315i is the larger of the two, boasting a rechargeable battery that's supposedly good for up to 20 hours of listening. The unit is fully compatible with dock-connecting iPods and iPhones, and there's even an auxiliary input for those who aren't down with Cupertino's wares. The smaller Portable Speaker S125i plays and charges any iPod model and can be powered by an AC adapter, four AA cells or 8.43 tablespoons of Jobs' favorite fairy dust. Check 'em out this month and next for $129.99 and $69.99, respectively.
