iLuv's $270 i1166 portable multimedia player finally shipping next month

Set in stone for March, eh? Looks like that ship date slipped just a wee bit. iLuv's curious i1166 -- which plays back an array of multimedia from an array of sources on its 9-inch LCD -- is now slated to ship to the US next month. Originally introduced at CES, the $269.99 device can play back content stored on an iPod, DVD, SD / MMC card or USB drive, though the omission of a screen resolution gives us serious pause. Other specs include twin 3.5 millimeter headphone jacks, an 'iPod-friendly' user interface and a bundled remote, none of which justify the lofty asking price in our humble eyes. You and your wallet can feel free to disagree in around a fortnight, though.

Tapstick Case Adds Buttons to Buttonless iPod Shuffle

Tapstick Case Adds Buttons to Buttonless iPod Shuffle

tapstick1

We love Apple’s minimalist ethic, and usually it means not just cleaner lines, but an easier-to-use gadget, like the iPhone. But sometimes Apple just goes too far. Exhibit A. The third-gen iPod Shuffle. Its buttonless design means that you have to either use Apple’s own earbuds or search out a pair of ultra-rare third-party headphones. Even then, you’ll need to learn the Shuffle’s proprietary version of Morse Code to tap out coded instructions, again all with a single button.

Which brings us to a product from Scosche, the splashproof Tapstick. It is a case for the Shuffle which adds buttons. This should be ridiculous, and in another universe we would rightly poke fun, but the fact is that Apple’s insane simplification makes this a genuinely useful stick of plastic. The buttons mimic those on the Shuffle’s ‘buds, so you’ll still have to learn the tappity-tap instructions, but one you have the case you can buy any headphones you like.

Better, the diminutive size of the Shuffle means that even when encased in polycarbonate, it is still tiny. It’ll cost you $30, or the same as a pair of replacement Apple earbuds.

inMotion Classic iPhone dock: small package, huge sound

inMotion Classic iPhone dock: small package, huge soundinMotion Classic iPhone dock: small package, huge sound

iPod docks have evolved to this: the Altec Lansing iMT620 inMotion Classic, a small audio device that sounds a whole lot bigger. Like most examples of its ilk, you place your iPhone or iPod into its base and it dutifully charges your handset while you listen. This one adds an extra dimension — that shiny kickstand in the back transforms into a carrying handle, letting you rock your iPhone/iPod, FM radio or any other audio player in the field for five hours, unplugged.

We tested the inMotion Classic with an iPhone 3GS, which caused no interference whatsoever, a problem we've seen when the iPhone is anywhere near many other audio devices. The most remarkable aspect of this tiny powerhouse is its kick-ass sound, nailing the bass with digital signal processing that really works. The twin 3-inch drivers sound a whole lot bigger than that, creating nicely balanced sound with crisp highs and clean midrange.

There are clever touches and design throughout, including a slot in the back where you can place the remote when you're not using it, luxo-sport looking aluminum construction, and an cool-looking backlit LCD display that shows source, iPod song and artist info. That FM radio comes complete with an old-style telescoping antenna, a nice hidden-away touch for those who can't get too far away from the radio. And if you want to take this rechargeable hotshot out on the town, it's small, just over 11 inches wide and much lighter than it looks, folding flat enough to fit in a backpack or carry-on bag.

This is one of the best iPod docks we've seen and especially, heard. Just released a few days ago, it's already been discounted from its retail price of $150 to $141.88. That's still a bit of a steep price to pay for an iPod/iPhone dock, but for one with this kind of power, impressive sound and easy portability, we think it's worth it.

Vuzix Wrap 310 video eyewear actually isn't the ugliest thing of all time

Vuzix Wrap 310 video eyewear actually isn't the ugliest thing of all time

Could it be? Could it really be? Has Vuzix actually deployed a video eyewear solution that isn't completely unsightly in every imaginable way? Our eyes may be deceiving us, but we're going with 'yes, amazingly' for the time being. Unlike the company's iWear line -- which looks pretty much exactly like the specs worn by Geordi La Forge -- the unpriced Wrap 310 resembles a set of sunglasses. Now, these aren't apt to be mistaken for Aviators or those patented Kayne joints, but at least you'd look halfway civilized if caught in public with these on your face. Packing a pair of video displays and promising a virtual 55-inch image, these get juiced by just two AA cells and can play nice with pretty much any video source, iPod and iPhone included. There's also an expansion port that'll give it VGA / component outputs in the near future, and if you subscribe to science fiction, it could also be used to read minds in around a score.

Video: KORG places an iPhone pocket in its microSAMPLER, calls it a day

Video: KORG places an iPhone pocket in its microSAMPLER, calls it a day

The kids over at Korg are a savvy bunch -- they know that the best way to perk up jaded bloggers (such as ourselves) is to somehow attach an iPhone to their device. Unfortunately, what we thought at first glance was an innovative/insane new way to make music on Apple's flagship handset turns out to be, in fact, little more than a sampler with a pocket for your media player and a 1/4-inch audio input. While we have you here, however, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention that, as samplers go, this one is pretty awesome. Featuring a 37-key keyboard, a number of sample modes (including autonext mode, which auto-magically slices a beat into individual hits, not unlike Propellerhead's ReCycle), a preset sound library, 21 KAOS-driven multi-parameter effects, and a USB cable for managing sounds on your Mac or PC (with the included Editor Librarian software), this could be the perfect companion for the microKORG that's already collecting dust in your bedroom. Of course, Korg wouldn't be able to sell this thing at Guitar Center without a heavy-handed, borderline silly promo vid ('Suddenly... you receive a gift... FROM YOUR OWN MIND... in the form of: THE PERFECT BEAT') which we highly suggest you check out after the break. Yours now for $750.

Mophie Announces Case for iPhone Case, Singularity Draws Nearer

Mophie Announces Case for iPhone Case, Singularity Draws Nearer

hip-holster

Another slip-on iPhone accessory today, this time in the form of this executive-dorktastic iPhone case from Mophie. Pretty much all you need to know is the name: Hip Holster.

The leather pouch has a belt clip and flap, and the ‘quick draw feature allows easy access for one-handed removal.’ Why is this any different from the one zillion other leather, belt mounted cellphone holsters (the businessman’s equivalent of the tramp stamp)? It is bigger than most, in order to accommodate both iPhone and a Juice Pack — another case from Mophie which holds an external battery for the iPhone.

That’s right. This is a case for a case, the beginnings of a cellular babushka which can only end in a wardrobe-sized prophylactic, one that most certainly won’t fit on a belt. But why stop there? Surely the next logical stage is a case into which the owner can slip in order to protect himself on the mean corridors between cubicles, a warm, womb-like haven from which he can call, uninterrupted by the world outside. Yes. We just invented the iPhone-booth. $30.

Fiio E1 In the Flesh Pictures - Portable AMP Designed for the iPod

Fiio E1 In the Flesh Pictures - Portable AMP Designed for the iPod

e1samp_9

We received a nice surprise when we were got our latest stock of Fiio goodies, the nice people at Fiio sent us over a sample of their new and upcoming E1 portable amp. The E1, unlike previous amps, is specifically an in line amp for the Apple iPod, obviously from the above picture you can tell it connects to the iPods docking port.

Many more pictures after the jump

e1samp_29

The E1 incorporates a remote of sorts, it does seem to have 5 functional buttons for track control, volume control and a play pause button located in the center. Fiio did tell us that the E1 we have is the finalized design and the sound quality of the sample will be the same as the final version, but on the sample version the programing for the buttons still needed to be done. Now i actually don’t have any iPod’s (shock!) to test this on right now, but i will be borrow an iPod touch later today to test the amps sound quality. I am pretty much expecting all the goodness of the E5 packed into an iPod specific accessory.

Overall the build quality is very good, it will certainly look very nice when attached to an iPod, i don’t think people will have much complaint about how the amp portion of the E1 looks, however the remote may take a bit of criticism. The back casing of the E1 remote has a small clip and for the most part looks very nice, the part that may take some heat are the very clicky buttons on the front of the player. I personally don’t think they are that bad, but i do see people who have picker tastes not liking the remote due to the buttons.

I certainly think the E1’s design is very nice and will appeal to many people, but more than that, if the E1 lives up to even being like the E3, then i think many iPod owners will be clambering for this in line amp.

No pricing details yet, but should not cost more than $30.

Follow up review of the sound quality once i get my hands on a iPod to test it on.
