Speaker Kit Uses iPod Box As An Enclosure

Speaker Kit Uses iPod Box As An Enclosure

Why make something homemade when you can buy something that looks homemade? The Bird-Electron EZ17-B iPod Recycling Speaker, to give it its full kennel-name, is a kind of homemade hybrid. The $40 panel contains two speakers and fits exactly into the top of the plastic box which once contained your iPod (1G and 2G Nano, 2G and 3G Shuffle).

The passive speakers are driven by the power from the headphone jack, so don't expect to rock a party. We like the re-use aspect, but $40 is steep for what is essentially a couple of cheap drivers in a plastic sheet – something you could easily knock together yourself. Still, it's an aesthetic step up from the traditional hacker's enclosure, the Altoids tin.
