Harman-Kardon MS100 all-in-one audio system will make your iPod look tiny

Shiny at IFA 2008: Harman-Kardon MS100 all-in-one audio system will make your iPod look tiny

Harman-Kardon_ms-100-thumb-400x275.jpg

As you've probably garnered from the picture, this is one behemoth of an all-in-one audio unit. It's not as attractive as those crystal-y speakers we saw earlier from Harman-Kardon, but it does pack some serious all-in-one audio goodness. This isn't some kind of lame trick from Harman-Kardon either, attempting to dupe you into buying something you believe does a multitude of things - it actually does. It's an iPod dock, a CD player, FM radio, speaker system and a clock radio. It's a whole lot of convenience rolled into one, as well as being a great space saver.

Philips intros the CinemaOne iPod / DVD soundbar

Philips intros the CinemaOne iPod / DVD soundbar

We suppose it was just a matter of time before iPod docks and HTIBs achieved some sort of unholy union, and their demonic lovechild has appeared at IFA -- say hello to the Philips CinemaOne. Essentially a mashup of an iPod speaker system, a DVD player, and a soundbar, it's designed to plug in to your flatscreen via HDMI and provide surround audio through five DSP-driven speakers and 4-inch sub, all in a package about the size of a football. The DivX-compatible DVD player seems decent, with 1080p scaling and Dolby Digital and DTS support, but even though the speakers use the same soundbar tech found in Philips' Ambisound line, we've got our doubts that this thing sounds any good -- most soundbars we've heard require a separate large sub to be effective. No pricing or release date yet, but we'd wait to actually hear this thing in person before we started to set aside spare change. Action shot after the break.

Altec Lansing FX3022 Speakers

Altec Lansing FX3022 Speakers

Altec Lansing FX3022 Speakers

Altec Lansing has just rolled out what is the first 2.2 powered audio system from the company that features a dual 4' subwoofer located in the base of each speaker. The company claims that the FX3022's 1.5' drivers will offer 'crisp vocals and high frequency detail', but unless you're a seasoned audiophile, I don't think the 128kbps MP3 generation will notice that much of a difference. Still, the speakers do take on a rather unorthodox design and can be connected for iPods as well as other MP3 players via the Aux input jack. Those in the UK will be able to pick up the FX3022 from October 1st onwards for £99.99.

DLO's Homedock Pro Adds 1080i HD Output to Your iPod [Docks]

DLO's Homedock Pro Adds 1080i HD Output to Your iPod [Docks]It was way back in February when we first alerted you to DLO's upcoming Homedock, but now there's more info available. The Homedock HD Pro is an upscaler dock that can add 1080i or 720p output to your iPod through an HDMI cable to your TV, and it's going to be demoed at the upcoming CEDIA Expo show. It's got 'industry standard connectivity' over RS-232 and I.P., with digital optical audio and an IR receiver so you can bolt it into your media setup and control it with universal IR remotes. Better still the dock has an 'enhanced on-TV interface' which 'features album art in an icon-based format,' which makes it sound like a mini AppleTV. There's no pricing info as yet.

iTrip Auto has a new look, still just as useful

iTrip Auto has a new look, still just as useful

itripa1

Word ‘got out’ a few days ago that Griffin has revised its iTrip line of FM transmitters for the iPod. First up was the iTrip Universal, which, shockingly, works with any device with a 3.5mm audio jack. Second up is the iTrip Auto, which is being showed off right now at IFA in Berlin.

Griffin says it’s been redesigned from ‘the ground up,’ which is fair to say. That is, it looks really different than the previous model.

The functionality is largely the same: you hook it up to your iPod, then it transmits The Game’s LAX (’Bulletproof Diaries’ is the best West Coast hip hop song in quite some time) or whatever to your car’s stereo while simultaneously charging your iPod.

If you have a car and an iPod this is probably the iTrip to get.

She should start showing up in stores in next month for around $60.

iLuv intros the iMM173 dual-dock iPod / iPhone alarm clock

iLuv intros the iMM173 dual-dock iPod / iPhone alarm clock

Putting two iPhone / iPod docks in an alarm clock is a simple and clever idea that's so far only shown up in the JVC-PN7 (which we have and love), but it looks like iLuv's getting in the game as well with the new iMM137. Apart from the two shielded iPhone 3G-compatible docks up top, it's the usual iLuv kit with 5 watt jAura sound, an aux input, and dual alarms -- not a bad deal for an MSRP of $129 that'll almost certainly be lower at retail when this hits in September.

The iStick keeps you and your Nano attached

The iStick keeps you and your Nano attached

The Nano is one of the more popular iPods to work out with, yes the shuffle is nice, but I hate that I can’t see a list of songs.  Plus it of course holds less than the Nano.  Well to keep the Nano on you while working out you can’t really pop it in your pocket, but there is the option of the armband.  However, armbands can be obnoxious to some people, it’s a preference thing really.  There isn’t any distinct reason that they would be bad, but some do consider them uncomfortable.  Well the iStik offers a new way to keep your Nano on you while doing your daily physical activities.

It utilizes magnets to keep it attached to you and the iPod secure.  Obviously since it does use a magnet you don’t want to use it if you have a pacemaker.  You also probably want to keep it away from your computer as well, they warn that it might damage your hard drive.  They specify that it should stay six inches away at all times.  There are two different versions, one for the 2nd Gen Nano for $24.95 and then one for the 3rd Gen Nano for $26.95.

DLO introduces HomeDock HD Pro: its latest upscaling iPod dock

DLO introduces HomeDock HD Pro: its latest upscaling iPod dock

One thing's for sure: DLO's pretty attached to its HomeDock brand, and evidently it could care less about just how confusing these naming schemes are to customers. Let's clear some cobwebs real quick -- this isn't the HomeDock Pro, nor is it the HomeDock HD. Rather, it's the HomeDock HD Pro, a glorious combination of the two (or something). Aimed at home theater enthusiasts and home installers alike, this upscaling iPod dock takes stored content to 720p or 1080i over HDMI, and you'll also find an HDMI extension socket, optical digital audio port, RS-232 control connector and IR output for supporting universal remotes. Expect this one to set you back $399 when it arrives this fall. Full release after the jump.

modern ipod/iphone alarm clock hangs right on your wall

modern ipod/iphone alarm clock hangs right on your wall

Looking for a nice digital alarm clock that you can dock your iPod or iPhone in, but don’t have room on your bedside table for anything decent? Then look no further than this nifty contemporary digital clock radio which can be mounted easily on your wall.

CVT i3101 Media Player Alarm Clock

The CVT i3101 media center alarm clock is slim enough to hang next to your bed, and is especially nice if you have a narrow room without space for a table. The clock offers a bright 3.5″ blue LED display and sleek touch controls for changing channels and controlling your media player. And when your significant other walks off with your media player, you can always listen to the built-in FM radio or any tunes you’ve got saved on an SD memory card.

CVT i3101 Media Player Alarm Clock

And if you do happen to have some table or counter space to spare, a kickstand lets you use it without wall-mounting. It looks like the clock’s Hong Kong manufacturer, CVT is also working on another version with an LCD video screen, but I haven’t found anyone retailing these yet. For now, you’ll have to settle for the version shown above, which is available from 100milligrams for $99.95 USD.

Sony intros iPod-friendly S-AIRPLAY multi-room audio system

Sony intros iPod-friendly S-AIRPLAY multi-room audio system

You know how it goes with Sony -- proprietary just seems to rule the roost. Thankfully, the outfit is at least recognizing a trend in the market by trotting out an iPod-friendly version of its S-AIR wireless audio technology. The new S-AIRPLAY system (formally known as AIR-SA20PK) comes with one iPod docking station and a pair of S-AIR wireless speakers, though there is an AM / FM tuner built in should your stored jams get stale. Sony suggests that music can be beamed some 164-feet away from the dock sans cabling, and so long as your S-AIR speaker is plugged into a power outlet (and within the aforementioned range), it'll pick up the signal and start talkin'. Look for the kit to land next month for around $400, while additional S-AIR wireless speakers will set you back $130 apiece. Full release after the break.

Sony Xross Fade Dual iPod DJ Dock Is Wiggity Wack []

The $500 Xross Fade DJ system is Sony's hard-to-pronounce dual iPod dock kit for mixing songs. It may have some rad-looking bass reflex speakers and dual subwoofers, but it's unfortunately gimped as far as DJ features go—you can cue and crossfade between songs, a technology straight outta 2005 and something you could do on a PC with moderate iTunes skills. There are also some presumably lame-ass drum beats you can lay top of your tracks to spice them up, but not much more. Seriously Sony, what gives? DJing is just no fun without some 'wikki wikki.'

Fusion will be rolling out its CA-IP500 head unit that boasts an internal iPod docking station, making it one of the first of its kind in the world. The head unit's faceplate is tilted open, revealing an empty space which will hold the iPod touch snugly. In addition, it is also compatible with both iPod 5G and the iPod classic, along with iPod nano (second and third generations). Controlling your iPod is pretty easy - you can do it from the head unit's controls while viewing the current playing track along with all the other information thanks to the OLED display. The CA-IP500 also doubles up as an iPod charger each time you dock your device inside. No word on a North American release, but you can get yours in Australia or the UK in September for approximately $280 after conversion.

Intempo unveils iPod-lovin' RDi-W / Fusion speaker systems

What can we say? Intempo has launched a new pair of iPod-compatible speaker systems, and unless you're somehow just entering the market for one in the latter half of 2008, chances are you're already yawning. Nevertheless, the RDi-W (pictured) does distinguish itself somewhat by including support for DAB and wireless internet radio, and there's a 30-watt internal amplifier to kick out the jams. The much drabber Fusion keeps things small and simple by offering up just 25-watts of power and DAB / FM tuners. Expect the couple to sashay into e-tailers next month for £169.99 ($316) / £99 ($184).>

Boston Acoustics reveals Horizon i-DS2 iPod boombox

It only takes a glance to realize that Boston Acoustics' Horizon i-DS2 iPod boombox is merely a cleaned up version of the knobby Duo-i, but we must say, the new look is pretty sleek. Built to function with any dock-connecting iPod, this 60-watt speaker system includes twin 3.5-inch full-range drivers, a composite video output, USB connector and an auxiliary input for plugging in other DAPs / PMPs. The unit itself arrives in glossy white or glossy black, though users with an itch to customize can select from a variety of P.O.P. metal grilles. On paper, the unit isn't too shabby, but the $179.99 price tag is somewhat of a drag.

It's got a few things going for it: it's large enough that different MP3 players can be tucked inside (there's few things that irk me more than buying cases and then having to toss them when I upgrade); it's submersible up to 12 feet, which is plenty for swimming and even snorkeling; and its 'ClearTouch' window actually will let you activate the touch controls of an iPhone or iPod touch, even in the water. So if a little crab starts changing your music to Under the Sea, be aware: you're about to be seduced by a redheaded mermaid who's going to drag you gurgling and coughing to rest on a shelf of her briny wunderkammer.

QingBar MP101 Mini Projector iPhone & iPod Touch Dock!

QingBar MP101 Mini Projector iPhone & iPod Touch Dock!

QingBar MP101 Mini Projector iPhone & iPod Touch Dock!

Here’s a cool projector for your iPhone and iPod Touch devices.  This projector will project between 15 to 27 inches of your iPhone/iPod Touch display onto a wall.

While the 640×480 image resolution is understandable, the ANSI brightness rating is a less-than-stellar 10-15 lumens, and you’re looking at a contrast ratio of just 200:1. So while it’s able to project an image that’s roughly 15 to 27 inches in size, don’t expect a similar visual experience as you get from your local digitally-equipped movie theater. The dock also features a mini AV jack allowing you to connect other devices as well as a set of 2W speakers for stereo sound. Unfortunately I have no idea if this thing is currently available, when it might be available, or what it will cost.

Lightning Review: Mint 220 Wireless Speakers With iPod Dock [Review]

Lightning Review: Mint 220 Wireless Speakers With iPod Dock [Review]

The Gadget: The Mint 220 Digital Music Station, which acts both as an iPod dock, but also as a wireless speaker system that syncs via USB dongle to your Mac or PC. Comes with wireless remote and uses the 2.4GHz spectrum to beam music up to 45 feet/15 meters.

The Price: $159 with $20 promo code (DS220)

The Verdict: Not too bad. The speakers themselves are adequate, though not as good as their previous wireless iPod dock effort. The 220 functions decently well as an iPod dock, but what you really want this for is its wireless speaker functions.

Imagine plugging in the USB dongle to your laptop—which doesn't have very good speakers—and beaming all audio to the wireless unit across the room. It's a fairly elegant solution to get around the fact that your laptop has less than optimal speakers and aren't easy to substitute by plugging into better ones when you're lounging on the couch.

The only note we have is that the 2.4GHz frequency the dongle uses to communicate is prone to interference, and if you use it on your laptop, you're going to get some intermittent audio. Everything was fine when we worked off an Ethernet connection, but when we fired up our wireless on the laptop, you could definitely tell some interference was going on when music keeps dropping out. Also (on at least the Mac version) you can't control volume via your computer; you have to use the wireless remote.

In the end, $159 isn't too steep a price to pay for wireless speakers that you can easily sync up to your laptop. If they'd fix the wireless interference and add volume control on your computer, we'd be able to recommend this fully.

Skullcandy Pipe iPod / iPhone dock looks like a femur

Skullcandy Pipe iPod / iPhone dock looks like a femur

n205141_brow.jpg

I've never really tried Skullcandy's sepulchral range of ear buds, mostly because of some uneducated assumptions that they must sound like crap if they look so neat for such a cheap price. The Skullcandy Pipe iPod / iPhone dock generates a similar reaction: sure, it would be neat to have an iPod dock in the kitchen that looked exactly like a sawn-off, patina-stained human femur — especially with a dab of red nail polish or three — but how great can it really sound for $90? The probable answer makes me feel like a joy-kill curmudgeon: 'Acceptable for the price.'

Review: Polk Audio iPod Dock Blasts Tunes, Tags Unknown Jams

Review: Polk Audio iPod Dock Blasts Tunes, Tags Unknown Jams

Polk_isonic_2
Polk Audio I-Sonic Entertainment System 2 with iTunes Tagging

Inventors have been dreaming up ways for radio listeners to tag jams emanating from boomboxes and alarm clocks since the late '90s. That was when a company called Xenote devised a USB keychain that could tell which songs were playing over the squawkbox with a push of its button. But it worked like crap and it never really caught on. But now with HD Radio signals now a reality in most areas of the country, song information can be send over the air along with the signal, which is how iTunes Tagging works in the Polk Audio I-Sonic Entertainment System 2.

At $500, the Polk isn't exactly cheap, but this four-speaker unit packs a considerable sonic punch considering its size and fills rooms with sharp audio in a way that eludes more inexpensive iPod speaker systems.

But really it's the iTunes Tagging feature that has us intrigued. Basically this function lets users tag songs with a button on the unit or the remote (some iPods not supported – see the 'Tired' section). This saves the song's information from any track currently playing on HD Radio and transfers it to the dock's internal memory. The next time you dock the iPod, the song data gets transfered to the Apple device's memory. Sync your iPod to your computer, and you'll see the songs you tagged appear in a special playlist, were they can be easily purchased from iTunes. We just wish this thing were capable of handling internet radio streams too.' —Eliot Van Buskirk

iPhone 3G Solar Charging Case

iPhone 3G Solar Charging Case

iPhone 3G Solar Charging Case (Images courtesy Mobile Fun)

By Andrew Liszewski

For some reason it’s been next to impossible to find a 16GB black 3G iPhone where I live, but I have spent plenty of time playing with an 8GB model, and I can attest to the fact that battery life isn’t one of the phone’s strong points. To remedy this situation a bunch of third-party battery pack accessories have been hitting the market, but this is the first one I’ve seen that also incorporates a solar panel. Now obviously the iPhone can’t be powered by solar energy alone (at least with a panel this small) so the case also features a 1500 mAh battery that can be used to provide one full charge for your iPhone.

Sitting in the sun the case’s battery will take about 3 hours itself to recharge, and it also includes a mini USB cable allowing you to recharge other gadgets and electronics when the iPhone is topped off. The case will be available sometime in August from Mobile Fun in black or white for about $54.
