Road Tested: DLO TransDock Deluxe

Road Tested: DLO TransDock Deluxe: "

A while back, DLO intro’d the TransDock Deluxe an extension of their wildly successful iPod auto dock line. I’ve used the Transdock Deluxe and have done my best to spill drinks on it, rough it up a bit and have a progress report.

TransDock Deluxe $129

Pros: Simple. Nice remote. USB port for charging your cell phone.

Cons: Velcro holder for remote is annoying. I’d still love a stronger, industrial strength FM transmitter.

Overall : 9/10 Road warriors rejoice! An intelligent system is finally available without many sacrifices.

The remote is very interesting. At first, because my sedan is rather compact I thought this item would be completely superfluous. I can reach everything in the cockpit with ease including the Transdock base. Changing songs and such is very simple, plus I’ve got some audio controls on the steering wheel.

I was wrong. Having control on the steering wheel made a big difference in ease of use. Sure the velcro holder got in my way (I don’t see another way to do it) but the remote made the experience better, especially on long trips. It was a very nice feature to add. The remote is a huge plus in vehicles like my Element where the iPod is out of comfortable reach to the driver.

The FM transmitter worked very well compared to the Belkin I’ve used in the past. It still requires changing the stations when entering new cities but that is to be expected. I’d still love a stronger one that takes over the station permanently. I promise not to use that power for bad.

What I loved about this unit is the addition of a USB port on the unit. Yes, it is under the unit, so if you have it set up for low-profile, you’ll need a work around, mine was to jack the base up with the included extensions. I was able to recharge my phone as well as listen to the iPod at the same time. Nice and hassle free. I’d like it better with side access, but to have it there all is a bonus.

I didn’t get to use the video out or audio in ports on the unit, but it is great to know that they are there.

Belkin's New iPod Cases Support Breast Cancer

Belkin's New iPod Cases Support Breast Cancer: "

Belkin iPod cases

Today, Belkin announced its latest cases for the iPod nano and shuffle, in which 10-percent of sales will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The Sport Armband for iPod nano ($24.99) is water-resistant and made with a 'stitchless' construction. The Remix Acrylic for iPod nano ($24.99) is a clear acrylic case with a soft backing that also protects the click wheel. The Statements (Charm/Folio Case) for iPod nano ($24.99) feature a ribbon pattern leather material with a wristlet for portability and get this ladies--an interior mirror that doubles as a picture frame! Finally, the Sport Armband for iPod shuffle ($19.99) may look weird at first since the shuffle is so small, but it's a different way to carry the shuffle instead of clipping it to your shirt or purse. It's also water-resistant and sports reflectors for nighttime use.

Each case comes in pink and 'bone' colors and will be available in Mid-September 2007.

Baby Dock: New Bose SoundDock Portable Arrives at Our Door

Baby Dock: New Bose SoundDock Portable Arrives at Our Door: "

Bose_SoundDock_Portable.jpgThose sneaky folks at Bose just launched one of their 'Press Conference in a Box' initiatives, this time unveiling the new Bose SoundDock portable: It's a bit smaller than the original, with a new remote, retractable dock, lithium-ion battery and, yes, auxiliary input.

You get three hours of battery life at full volume, though it can run for 'much longer' if you keep it lower. The battery will charge your iPod even when the dock is not plugged into the wall.

I don't have the other SoundDock at the moment to shoot side by side, but the new one is 6.75 inches high, and just over 12 inches wide. When the dock is swiveled shut, as you can see in the gallery, the depth of the unit is just over 4 inches. It's not super light: according to my precision instruments it weighs just under 5 lbs.

Bose says the SoundDock Portable will be out at the end of September in high-gloss white or black, and will cost a whopping $399. Man, that lithium ion just doesn't go down in price, does it? The original SoundDock will keep on sellin', still at $299.

Chestnut Hill George price dropped

Looks like those who have been eyeing the Chestnut Hill George for some time now will be able to pick it up for $500 after a 10% price reduction. Not only that, Chestnut Hill has included an outboard remote charging stand at no additional cost as long as you purchase it before the year is over. Should you get one today (or within the next month), take note that side panels and speaker grilles will be released this October, coming in different colors to suit your abode's color scheme. They'll set you back by another Benjamin though, but nobody ever said fashion and good taste were cheap. New owners will also benefit from the latest firmware that adds a bunch of tweaks and improvements for their benefit.

Belkin TuneCommand AV for iPod

Going into the production of our 2007 iPod Buyers’ Guide, there were several new iPod accessories that we really looked forward to seeing perform up to full expectations, as they would conceivably have been category leaders had they been properly executed. Belkin’s TuneCommand AV for iPod ($80) was near the top of this list - a smart combination of a radio frequency (RF) remote control and audio-video iPod dock, promising to let users control iPod audio and video on a TV located up to 120 feet away. Unlike similar products from companies such as DLO, Belkin’s dock and remote design was simple and mercifully small - the dock’s only a little bigger than one of Apple’s, and besides its additional broadcasting power, the remote is similar to an Apple Remote, only with shuffle and repeat buttons in addition to track backward/forward, volume, and play/pause buttons.
Our enthusiasm wasn’t only based on the unit’s technology and simple design - on paper, it seems like a much better deal than Apple’s iPod AV Connection Kit (B+), which for $100 delivers an iPod Universal Dock, AV cable, Remote, power supply and cable in a single package. Belkin’s new dock is also Universal Dock standard-compliant, and includes five Dock Adapters for various sizes of iPods, a power adapter to keep the iPod charged while docked, and an AV cable - S-Video and composite video out are both supported, with pretty clean audio and video signals relative to some of the iPod video docks we’ve seen. Additionally, Belkin’s includes several add-ons for its RF remote, namely a detachable lanyard necklace and belt clip, along with an adhesive pad that attaches the clip to any flat surface for storage. Oh - have we underscored enough that this whole package sells for only $80?

Review: iLuv i199 Stereo System for iPod - PC Mag

Review: iLuv i199 Stereo System for iPod - PC Mag: "

Creative-Zen-Vision-W-Trusted-Reviews

A review of the iLuv i199 Stereo System for your iPod has been posted over at PC Mag.
'The iLuv i199 has a striking, polished black contour, but it is probably too bulky to win any design awards. At roughly 15 by 7.8 by 5 inches and with a substantial weight, you'll need a sturdy bookshelf or a lot of space on your desktop for this one. iLuv also covers the i199 in stickers that are hard to peel off. I sincerely hope that my review unit is an anomaly. If not, be prepared for 'sticker shock'—and to use Goo Gone to get rid of it all. The front face of the i199 has a 5- by 1-inch LCD display with a CD slot below it. This LCD displays the time and date, as well as whatever information it can about the music or radio station you're listening to.'

Why have a gathering when you can have a HouseParty Blu?

Why have a gathering when you can have a HouseParty Blu?: "housepart.jpg

Now I'm a big fan of my iPod, but a constant gripe is that I can't ever find a good enough speaker for it. It's well and good to use headphones when travelling about but at home I'd like something a little more vocal, and all the speakers about seem to sound rather tinny and not have a huge amount of bass. The HouseParty Blu combats this by including 2 x 30W speaker units inside a sleek small box, that can act as a charging dock for your iPod, or alternatively stream music from any Bluetooth enabled device. Music on your mobile is suddenly free, and the built in Bluetooth stereo transfer facility is very handy if a friend wants to play you their latest song of the moment; with no fiddly wires to worry about.

Stairway to Heaven - Zeppelin iPod Speaker System

Stairway to Heaven - Zeppelin iPod Speaker System: "

bw_zeppelin-speaker.jpg

The legendary English company, Bowers & Wilkins, known for its high-performance loudspeakers, designed this speaker system with the iPod in mind.

Using the B&W 800 series as a jumping off point, the Zeppelin incorporates the midrange and tweeter drivers in a curved profile that produces smooth response and evenly distributed sound. Bass comes from a 5-inch subwoofer located in the center and twin rear-firing ports.

The Zeppelin includes a 'pebble-like mini remote' handset for volume, source select and mute control that works with iPods’ play/pause and track-selection functions.

With Zeppelin, B&W offers high-end sonic experience , and at $599, the early adopters will be the die-hard audiophiles, who will pony up the cash for this beautifully designed system.

In an ironic twist, this stereo system for your iPod is dubbed 'Zeppelin,' and though it will be selling at Apple stores this fall, you still can't download any Zep tunes from iTunes. Doesn't seem fair, does it?

DICE Electronics is proud to launch their high-end iPod tube amplifier system, the iTPA-220. The amplifier system has an auxiliary input for additional audio devices such as a computer or any MP3 players. It also features a video output for use with the video iPods. Speakers feature a bass reflex port to increase bass response.

The unit comes with a remote control with features such as volume control, mute, next/previous track, play and pause functions. The built in 2x20 Watt solid state amplifier, the 4' mid/bass driver and the 1' dome tweeter create a wide dynamic range for an enhanced music quality.

The dual 6N3 tubes in the preamplifier gives the listener the warmest sound and the clearest highs ever heard from an iPod docking station. The 'warmth' and 'richness' typically associated with 'valve sound' comes from the presence of 2nd order distortion smoothing the output soundwave. The tube preamplifier creates a more natural sound as opposed to the often harsh, dry sound of digital audio.

IPod JBL radial micro 8

JBL.jpg

JBL's original Radial is one of our favorite iPod speaker systems, thanks to impressive audio quality - among the best of any desktop system for the iPod - and an attractive design. However, this is particularly expensive so to attract more buyers, JBL shrank the Radial down, and called the less-expensive result Radial Micro.

Now, JBL is releasing its latest for the Radial, the JBL Radial Micro 8. The Radial Micro 8 basically still has the same eye-catching design - a circular shape surrounding a Universal iPod dock. The Radial Micro 8 includes a 1/8-inch stereo-input minijack for listening to an audio source other than a dockable iPod (cable included), as well as a USB-B port for connecting the system to your computer to sync your iPod with iTunes (cable not included).

At $150, the Radial Micro 8 isn't the least expensive desktop/compact speaker system, but it's an attractive option - figuratively and literally - given its good sound quality and standout design.
