Hands-on with the Altec Lansing InMotion Classic (IMT620)
I recently had some news through about the Altec Lansing InMotion Classic IMT620, which I posted up. Basically it’s an iPhone/iPod speaker stand, including both an FM Radio, and the ability to take an AUX input - a handy variety of options then! Well now I’ve had one for a while, I have some thoughts to share:
Form Factor
Altec Lansing seem to be spending their time producing products with a great balance of weight/portability, and great industrial styling. The slab styling here looks really nice - about 10x better than a lot of DAB radios I’ve seen the past 18 months! The stowage of the remote is great too, and the dual-purpose carry handle/stand is a clever trick too. Probably the only thing that isn’t on-board is the chunky power supply, but bearing in mind this has an internal rechargeable battery, you don’t need the power pack that often!
Connectivity and Usage
For Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) devices, the connectivity is great - there’s also an AUX connector on the back of the device too. Adaptors are provided for the Apple connector, to help you dock both iPhones and iPods - which are all officially supported. Usage is simple - the ‘source’ toggle button and power button do exactly what they say on the tin, and the buttons have a nice tactile response to being pressed. The other volume +/- and track fwd/rwd buttons are simply done, and work well. There’s not much more to say, other than everything works really well!
Sound Quality
Here’s the key thing again - what about the sounds? Well for something so small, it really can pump out the volume. I presume advances in speaker technology and audio processing have something to do with it, because the fidelity of this unit is head and shoulders above some of the other units I’ve seen in the market. In short, it sounds great!
Conclusion
The conclusion - if I didn’t have one already, I’d buy one. It would (and has) live in the kitchen, and with the mains connected, not only charges the iPhone, but also sucks funky tunes out of it, and pipes them round the room - nice! This is a very well-crafted bit of kit, and highly recommended.
